In today’s culture of love you, until I am no longer interested, divorce is the norm. To hear of marriages lasting for long periods of time is inspiring.

The definition of the word marriage—or, more accurately, the understanding of what the institution of marriage properly consists of—continues to be highly controversial. Regardless of the different views, it is still considered an intimate or close union of individuals united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law.

Unfortunately once the emotional investment of this union is challenged marriage becomes legality and no longer a consensual union. The interest to invest in the relationship is not strong enough to maintain the union thus resulting in divorce.

Relationships require the willingness to invest time towards its potential growth and success. Each must make an effort to understand themselves and their partner’s needs and focus on that union and not selfish interests. When focusing on pleasing your partner more than your own needs each will benefit.
